Body Care Sale!

If you are new to clean eating and living, you may be wondering what body care products you should be using, or not using. A lot of my clients ask me what they should be doing in terms of lotions, soaps, and even home cleaning products. To be honest, this is something I often forget about. I use a wide range of natural products, but I seem to forget to share that information with others. However, when I found out about Whole Foods Market's Body Care sale this weekend -  I knew it was time to share some of my favorite products with you!

So, in honor of Whole Food Market's 25% OFF Body Care sale this Friday-Sunday (October 6-8th, 2017), I have complied a list of some the things I think you should take advantage of!

A few of my favorites:

1) Dry Skin Brush

  • Dry skin brushing has many benefits. Some of those include supporting your lymphatic system, which makes up your immune system. Dry skin brushing helps stimulate the lymph flow and enables the body to detox naturally. This also increases circulation and encourages the elimination of metabolic waste. Another benefit is exfoliation. Dry skin brushing helps loosen and remove dead skin cells, working as a natural exfoliant.
  • Most people say you should use a dry skin brush 2-3 times a week. Brushing your skin in a circular motion, towards the heart. I personally like to use my dry skin brush before taking a hot shower.

2) Enfusia Bath Salts

  • Made from botanical extracts, vitamins, and essential oils
  • Was created by someone who dealt with eczema and was frustrated with traditional lotions and soaps that contained harsh chemicals
  • 100% vegan and cruelty free
  • Made in Texas

3) EO Lavender Body Oil

  • I use this oil in baths, but I also use it as a makeup remover or moisturizer. I will dip a Q-tip in it and use it to remove makeup or to put oil on a certain dry spot.
  • EO is one of my favorite brands, simply because I LOVE their lavender scent, and I'm sure you will too!

4) Skin Trip Coconut Body Lotion

  • I've been using this lotion for years, and I love how light it feels on my skin. It absorbs instantly and doesn't leave me feeling sticky or like I just put a gallon of cream on my pores.
  • Made from coconut oil and aloe vera
  • Family owned company
  • Made in Boulder, Colorado

5) Clarifying Charcoal Face Wash Bar, Pacha Soap Co.

  • I found this soap about a year ago and completely fell in love. I always struggled finding a face cleanser that didn't leave me dry or oily. I have pretty neutral skin and I wanted to keep it that way. I swear by this bar!
  • The charcoal in this bar is extremely cleansing and detoxifying (which is probably why it works so well)!
  • Made in Dallas, Texas

6) Lavender and Eucalyptus Body Soap Bar, Pacha Soap Co.

  • I just started using their body bars a few months ago. My skin feels hydrated after using them, PLUS the smells are incredible :)
  • Made in Dallas, Texas

7) Whole Foods Market Shampoo & Conditioner

  •   Personally, I just want a good shampoo and conditioner that is affordable, doesn't dry my hair, doesn't grease my hair, and that smells good. This one checks all my boxes! A lot of natural shampoos and conditioners left my hair either really dry or really oily, but this one doesn't!
  • Created by the same person who made Aveda hair care, which seems to be really popular :)

Let's Talk: Olive Oil

Today I want to share with you a little tip to improve your home cooking!

As I have been teaching more private lessons recently, I realized that I always start my cooking portion off with the same topic - olive oil. Just how I believe in the quality of the produce and food we give ourselves, I am a huge believer in the quality of our olive oil.

I personally notice a drastic difference between vegetables cooked with a high quality oil vs vegetables cooked with a cheap, common, store bought oil. A lot of people ask me what my trick is to cooking veggies- and the truth is in the oil! The oils I use flavor my food far beyond the typical oil, and they allow me to use less salt and spices due to their high quality flavor.

I know some people try to avoid using oils, and that's fine too. But for me, as long as I am using a high quality olive or coconut oil - I am set!

So, without further ado, I would like to introduce you to my Oil Tree, by Olive & Co., Oils! And just so you know... this is definitely not a sponsored post. They don't even know I am writing this.

As you can see, I use the tuscan herb and garlic infused olive oils. I also have a regaular extra virgin that I love, as well as a slew of other flavors! However, these two are definitely my favorites because of how versatile they are.

I use these on almost all of my vegetables, and sometimes even on pasta or salad! They have all kinda of flavors and vinegar pairings, so no matter what you are cooking- they can fix you up. Their store is currently on May and Wilshire in OKC, but they will be moving to the Nichols Hills Plaza in a few months.

So, as soon as you're ready to step up your game in the kitchen- head on over to Olive & Co and stock up on all of their infused oils. They truly are my secret ingredient :)

Smoothie Basket Giveaway + WFM Supplement Sale!

In honor of Whole Foods Market's semi-annual 25% OFF supplement sale happening this weekend, we are doing a smoothie basket giveaway!! Thats's right, all of your favorite smoothie ingredients, totally FREE!

First, you should know that Whole Foods Market is having their 25% OFF supplement sale THIS WEEKEND, Friday, August 11th - Sunday, August 13th. This sale includes everything from Probiotics and Vitamin D to Chia Seeds and Maca Powder; pretty much all of your necessities :) So, even if you don't win the giveaway -  you should definitely make your way into the store to stock up on all of your favorites and get in on the savings!

But now.... let's talk about this giveaway!!

If you know me, you probably know that I'm madly obsessed with smoothies. I drink one, if not two, almost everyday. For me, smoothies are the ultimate "fast food." When I am in a rush and need a meal on the go, I can throw a smoothie together in less than 10 minutes and it will most likely be my healthiest meal of the day. I love the fact that I can throw in my greens and my superfoods and still have it taste like a milkshake if I so please ;)

Furthermore, smoothies are one of the easiest things to add to your diet when you are trying to live a healthier life. I try to teach people to add something to their diets before they try to take away. So, if you are looking for a kick start, make it your goal to ADD a smoothie to your day, everyday. Before you know it you'll naturally be taking out something that no longer serves you.

But before I get carried away... let's cut to the chase!

I've hand picked 5 of my favorite smoothie ingredients to give away, and I will be posting smoothie recipes to go along with these ingredients starting tomorrow!!

Vega Protein Giveaway + Recipe!

First, you should know that Whole Foods Market is having a 25% off sale THIS WEEKEND, June 2nd-June 4th, on all protein powders!!  So, if you're ready to step up your protein game or just stock up on all of your favorites, you should definitely check it out.

When I found out about this sale I was pretty pumped for several reasons...

  1.  I wanted to tell all my clients about it right away! Most of them use protein shakes when they are busy and on-the-go, and a lot of the one's I recommend are more expensive than your average protein powder (it's all about quality, not quantity), so I didn't want them to miss out!
  2. I personally wanted to stock up on my favorite, Vega! (I'll explain why I choose Vega in a bit)
  3. This protein sale brought on a GIVEAWAY from Whole Foods Market through my blog, so I was SUPER excited to be able to share one of my favorite products with one lucky winner! Plus- it gives me an excuse to go on a protein powder rant ;)

So- Why is Vega my favorite protein powder??

A few years ago I took a plant based sports nutrition course taught by Brendan Brazier, the founder of Vega products and author of Thrive books. Prior to the course, I was already using Vega protein and never even knew it was his brand. I originally started using Vega in highschool because it was 100% plant based and had little to no sugar in it, plus it tastes good! However, throughout his course- I fell in love with it even more.

In a nutshell, the foundation of sports nutrition all comes down to recovery time. If you can recover faster - you can train harder. So, how do we recover faster? By consuming plant based proteins that have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body, by giving our adrenal glands the proper replenishment, and by fueling ourselves with superfoods and high quality ingredients. Hints- VegaOne.

VegaOne is my personal favorite protein powder. I like it because it has everything I need in ONE.  Plant based protein, maca to support my adrenal glands, superfoods like chlorella to keep my body alkaline, probiotics to support a healthy gut, and digestive enzymes to ensure I am getting the most out of my post-workout shake. Can you tell I am a little obsessed?

You can mix it with water or with your choice of non-dairy milk, or even make a smoothie with it! (Recipe to follow)

Now...who wants a recipe? :) See below!

Chocolate Protein Smoothie

(1-3 hours post-workout)

The body often has trouble digesting when it is fatigued. Digestion requires a lot of internal energy, which you may not have much of after a hard workout. Sometimes a liquid meal is the best option, so it gives your digestion system more time to recover.

1 banana

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk or coconut water

1 scoop Chocolate VegaOne

1 tsp spirulina powder (optional)

2 tbsp raw cocoa powder (optional)

Handful of ice

Directions:  Combine all ingredients into a blender, including ice, and blend until smooth. Add more liquid if necessary.

The BEYOND Burger Giveaway + Recipe!

To all my Oklahomies who want to win some free BEYOND burgers... this is for you!

If you haven't heard of Beyond Meat's new burger, now you have! I give you - the BEYOND burger! I've been living a plant based lifestyle for the past 7 years, so when I first got my hands on one of these while traveling last September, I was STOKED. And after several months of anticipation.. they are now sold at the Whole Foods Market in Oklahoma City!

This is not your typical veggie burger or meat substitute... this will blow your mind. These burgers are designed to look like, smell like, and cook like a typical cow burger, and they seriously nailed it! The first time I sampled it at a Whole Foods Market in Colorado, I had to double check that I didn't accidentally eat animal meat. I was fooled!

So, do you want to win some for free?! I thought you might :)

I've teamed up with Whole Foods Market OKC to giveaway 2 packages of these burgers (4 burgers total) PLUS a $25 gift card to one lucky winner!

1. You must follow us both on Instagram (Emmaryanvc and Wholefoods) OR like us both on Facebook (Emma Ryan and Whole Foods Market)

2.. Tag two friends in the comments on this post using Instagram or Facebook

3. Comment why you want to try a meat-free option or who you are going to cook them for!

**Winner will be announced within 48 hours and they will claim their prize at Whole Foods Market in OKC.**

Ready...Set... GOOO!!!!!!!!

Once you have your burgers... Here is what I suggest :)

1. You should definitely grill them. It tastes the most like a "real" burger when it is grilled, and I nearly caught my toaster oven on fire trying to cook one in there.

2. Use a pretzel bun. Hands down best decision ever. (Made by Pretzilla and also sold at Whole Foods OKC)

3. Get ALL the toppings. Whatever you like, make sure you have it. This burger is so good you want to dress it up right and treat it like you would a "real" burger. Stack it on up, the higher the better.

Toppings I chose:

1. Just Mayo (vegan mayonnaise brand)

2. Miyoko's Creamery garlic herb cashew cheese spread (sold at Whole Foods Market)

3. Caramelized onion

4. Grilled mushrooms

5. Heirloom tomato

6. Avocado

7. Spinach

8. Microgreens

If you love this burger as much as I do... tell me about it! Tag me in your posts or comment on the blog. I want to hear about all the ways you go BEYOND!

If you haven't tried matcha yet, I highly recommend you do!

Matcha is a type of green tea. In fact, it's the only green tea where you can consume the entire leaf, so it is ground up into a powder form. Aside from it's caffeine boost and delectable taste, it actually has a lot of health benefits. It has a high amount of antioxidants, is said to help boost your metabolism and endurance, and its chlorophyll content aids in alkalizing and detoxifying your body.

The reason I like matcha so much is because I don't ever feel like I have a crash afterwards like most coffee drinkers feel. I also choose matcha over coffee a lot because, unlike coffee, matcha is not acidic. And since we want our bodies to be less acidic and more alkaline, matcha it is!

It is growing in popularity, so it is pretty common to see matcha latte's at most coffee or tea houses. However- not all matcha is created equal, just like coffee.

For example, the matcha you can get at Starbucks is loaded with added sugar. Even a lot of the matcha powder you can buy in health food stores has added sugar. So, depending on where you live, it can be difficult to find a pure source of matcha powder.

Lucky for you, if you live in Oklahoma city, Urban Tea House sells a really high quality matcha powder. I normally buy several ounces of it at a time so I can make my own latte's at home. Sometimes I'll even put the powder in my smoothies or in baked goods. This is also the powder I used in the recipe below :)

2 cups non-dairy milk

2 tsp matcha powder

3 T honey or agave

In a small sauce pan, heat your milk of choice on low-medium heat.

Add in your matcha and sweetener, and whisk until smooth. If the matcha starts to clump together, you may want to use a hand blender.

Feel free to add more or less sweetener, depending on what you like best.

Once it is hot, pour into cups of your choosing or over ice.

Turmeric Milk Latte's

I fell in love with turmeric for it's numerous health benefits, but now I'm completely obsessed with  this wildly delicious turmeric milk latte, also known as golden milk.

Turmeric is widely known for it's anti-inflammatory properties, but not very many people realize just how much this finger-staining root could change their lives. So, let's go over the benefits of turmeric for a quick second...

  • anti-inflammatory (aids in joint pain, skin issues, speeds up workout recovery, etc.)
  • anti-cancerous
  • anti-bacerial (boosts immune system)
  • improves sleep
  • aids with digestion
  • anti-aging

Along with other things, I started using turmeric daily after my surgery for thyroid cancer, and I recovered better and faster than the doctors ever imagined. I continue to drink golden milk and/or put turmeric root in my smoothies almost daily. I notice a HUGE difference in my digestion and overall inflammation.

This turmeric latte is super easy to make thanks to Gaia Herbs, and it is best when drank about 30-45 minutes before bed. If you don't have access to a Whole Foods Market, I would recommend ordering this product online. You can even find it on Amazon!

1 cup coconut or almond milk

2 tsp golden milk powder by Gaia

1 T local honey

Add all ingredients into a small sauce pan and place over the stove. With medium heat, continuously stir the liquid so the turmeric doesn't get chunky. Once warm, pour into a mug or cup of your choice!

Let me know if you have any questions!
